CryoNest LN2 Storage Vessels

Cryogenic storage vessels hold biological samples at cryogenic temperature for years at a time. A vessel is vacuum insulated, with liquid nitrogen either surrounding the samples directly or sitting below a platform so they are held in cold vapour. Which arrangement suits a laboratory depends on its protocols, not on the vessel alone.

The CryoNest® Series is built for embryo, oocyte and gamete banking in IVF laboratories, fertility clinics and sperm banks. Three capacities, each with six rack positions:

CryoNest® XL, 95 litres, 790 mm high by 678 mm wide, six racks of up to 24 compartments
CryoNest® XXL, 145 litres, 980 mm by 678 mm, six racks of up to 30 compartments
CryoNest® XXXL, 175 litres, 1055 mm by 678 mm, six racks of up to 30 compartments

Roller bases are supplied for safe handling, since a charged vessel is not something to be dragged across a laboratory floor.

Choosing a capacity

Size the vessel from your projected straw inventory rather than from price. Since 1 July 2022 UK patients can store eggs, sperm and embryos for up to 55 years with consent renewed every ten years, so samples now accumulate far faster than they leave. Count your current straws by format, add the annual freezing rate less realistic discards, and convert that into goblet, cane and rack positions for the vessel’s own organisation system. Straw capacity depends on your goblet and visotube combination, so ask for that calculation against your formats rather than working from a headline vial count.

Monitoring

ESHRE’s 2026 good practice recommendations for the IVF laboratory state that cryostorage tanks should be continuously monitored and fitted with alarms that detect and log any out of range temperature or liquid nitrogen level. ASRM’s 2020 cryostorage opinion goes further on sensor choice, recommending level probes suspended in the liquid over temperature probes suspended in the vapour, because level falls before temperature rises.

Larger and smaller requirements

For working stock beside the bench, the CryoCan range covers 30 to 47 litres. For biobank and regional scale storage, the CryoBank Series runs from 350 to 1,800 litres with level, temperature and power alarms and a remote alarm output.

Cryolab has supplied cryogenic storage to NHS and private hospitals, IVF clinics and research facilities since 2000, and holds ISO 9001:2015 certification through BSI. For a capacity calculation against your own inventory, contact the team.
