Liquid Nitrogen Face Shield: The One Piece of Kit You Cannot Skip in Any Cryolab

Nobody in a fertility clinic thinks about safety gear until something goes wrong. And by then, you’d give anything to go back and put the face shield on. Working with liquid nitrogen is routine in IVF labs, cryobanks, and andrology units, but routine does not mean safe by default. Liquid nitrogen burns are catastrophic, fast, and entirely preventable with the right protection.

This is a piece about the liquid nitrogen face shield specifically, because it’s the piece of PPE most commonly worn incorrectly, most frequently substituted with inadequate alternatives, and, most critically, the one protecting your face and eyes from the splash that happens when you least expect it.

Why Liquid Nitrogen Is Not Like Other Lab Hazards

Liquid nitrogen sits at -196 degrees Celsius. Contact with skin causes immediate cryogenic burns that can look deceptively mild at first but cause deep tissue damage. Eyes are particularly vulnerable because even a momentary splash or vapour exposure can cause corneal damage or blindness. Liquid nitrogen also expands approximately 700 times in volume when it vaporises, so a splash into an enclosed container or onto warm equipment produces sudden pressure, ejecting liquid unpredictably.

Standard lab safety glasses are not sufficient. Standard goggles without proper cryogenic splash rating are not sufficient either. You need a full face shield with the correct specification.

What to Look for in a Liquid Nitrogen Face Shield

A proper cryogenic face shield should cover the full face from forehead to chin and wrap around to the sides. It should be made from a material rated for cryogenic temperatures, as some plastics become brittle and can shatter at very low temperatures. The shield must be anti-fog, because the vapour generated when working with liquid nitrogen creates instant fog on inadequate visors. It should also be lightweight enough to be worn comfortably throughout a session, because if it’s uncomfortable, staff will remove it, which defeats the purpose entirely.

Look for shields conforming to EN 166 or EN 168 standards, which are the European standards for personal eye protection. For cryogenic work specifically, seek out products explicitly listed for use with liquid nitrogen or cryogenic splashes.

Cryolab stocks a range of IVF safety wear including appropriate face protection for cryogenic lab environments. If you’re equipping a new lab or refreshing your existing PPE stock, we can help you make sure you’ve got the right gear.

Correct Way to Use a Face Shield When Handling Liquid Nitrogen

The face shield goes on before you open the tank. Not after. Not when you think the difficult bit is coming. Before you begin. Many splash incidents happen during what seemed like a routine, low-risk part of the procedure, retrieving a straw, topping up the tank, moving a goblet. The ‘low-risk’ moment is where complacency lives.

Pair your face shield with appropriate cryogenic gloves, a lab coat with long sleeves, and, ideally, closed-toe shoes. The face shield protects your face. It does not protect your hands, wrists, or feet. Full PPE is the standard, not an optional upgrade.

Training Matters as Much as the Equipment

Having the right face shield in the drawer does not make your lab safe. Your team needs to understand why it’s worn, when it must be worn, and what to do in the event of exposure. That means documented training, regular refreshers, and a culture where no one ever feels like the safest member of the team is the one who doesn’t bother with PPE. Because in a cryogenic environment, the opposite is true.

Beyond the Face Shield: Full Cryogenic Safety in Your Lab

A properly equipped cryobiology lab pairs face protection with the right storage solutions, because safer handling starts with good tank organisation and well-labelled canes and goblets that reduce the time your hands and face are near the liquid nitrogen surface.

Cryolab offers a full range of IVF storage accessories and vial storage canes designed to make your cryostorage workflow smoother and safer. The less rummaging around in a tank you need to do, the lower your splash risk.

Don’t Negotiate on Face Protection

In every other area of lab procurement, there are reasonable decisions to make about value, volume, and specification. Face protection for liquid nitrogen is not one of those areas. Get the right shield. Make sure every person who touches a cryogenic storage tank is wearing it. Full stop.

The oocyte in the straw is irreplaceable. So are your embryologist’s eyes.
