Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is the analysis of embryo cells for chromosomal or genetic abnormalities before transfer. It is performed on biopsied cells taken from a blastocyst, and the timing of the process means that vitrification is an integral part of every PGT cycle.
After biopsy, the blastocyst is vitrified while the biopsied cells are sent to a genetics laboratory for analysis. Results typically take 1 to 2 weeks. The blastocyst remains in cryogenic storage during this period and is only warmed and transferred if the genetic result supports it. This means every PGT cycle requires at least one vitrification and warming event per embryo tested, making the quality and consistency of the vitrification system directly relevant to PGT outcomes.
The biopsy procedure itself requires specialist pipettes. Cryolab’s biopsy pipette range covers the bore diameters and tip configurations used in UK clinical practice for trophectoderm biopsy at blastocyst stage.

PGT has transformed the clinical management of recurrent miscarriage and chromosomal abnormality risk in IVF. But every PGT programme adds a mandatory vitrification event to the cycle. The quality of the vitrification system used is therefore a direct determinant of PGT programme outcomes, not just a background infrastructure consideration.

The CBS High Security Vitrification Kits provide the closed-system carrier format appropriate for post-biopsy blastocyst vitrification. For consumable advice specific to PGT programmes, contact the Cryolab team or use CryoGPT.
