Embryo donation is the process by which a couple or individual donates embryos they no longer wish to use for their own treatment to another patient or to research. In the UK, embryo donation for treatment requires HFEA consent from all gamete providers and is subject to the same regulatory framework as donor sperm and egg use. Donors are entitled to receive identifying information requests from any resulting children once those children reach 18.
Storage during the donation process
Donated embryos remain in cryogenic storage at -195.8°C at the originating or receiving clinic throughout the consent and matching process. Inter-clinic transfer of donated embryos requires a validated dry shipper and full chain-of-custody documentation. All cryopreservation standards applicable to patient embryos apply equally to donated embryos.
Cryolab supplies cryogenic storage and transport equipment to UK fertility clinics. Visit cryolab.co.uk or call 01243 781 121.
