Embryo cryopreservation is the freezing and storage of embryos, most commonly using vitrification today rather than the older slow-freeze methods, so they can be used in future IVF treatment cycles without needing to repeat ovarian stimulation and egg collection. It is a standard and long-established part of fertility treatment in UK clinics and is regulated by the HFEA, which sets requirements around storage, consent and traceability. Cryolab’s involvement in this field goes back to the earliest days of the discipline, and Paul Hague personally demonstrated controlled-rate freezer technology to Professor Robert Edwards, the Nobel Prize-winning pioneer of IVF, during his time at Planer plc.
