Cryo storage refers to the long-term preservation of biological samples at cryogenic temperatures, typically in liquid nitrogen or liquid nitrogen vapour at -196 degrees C. Inside a storage vessel, samples are organised using a hierarchical system of cryogenic hardware. Individual samples are contained in cryovials or straws. Vials and straws are placed in cryogenic goblets or cane-top adapters. Goblets are loaded onto cryogenic canes – long, slim rods typically made from stainless steel or aluminium. Canes are stored in canisters or racks suspended in the vessel’s neck or interior. Each level of this hierarchy is labelled for identity and traceability. In a busy IVF clinic or sperm bank, the organisation system must allow rapid, accurate retrieval of specific samples without unnecessary exposure of other samples to ambient temperatures during the access event. Cryolab supplies a full range of cryo storage equipment and consumables including cryogenic canes, goblets, cryovials, and cryogenic sleeves.
