Cryogenic canes are slim rods, typically 34 to 36 centimetres in length, made from stainless steel or aluminium, used to organise and store cryopreserved biological samples within liquid nitrogen storage vessels. Cryovials, straws, or goblets containing samples are attached to or loaded onto the cane, which is then suspended vertically inside the storage vessel using a canister or rack system. Canes provide a structured, retrievable organisation system for sample inventories that may contain hundreds or thousands of individual samples. In IVF and andrology practice, canes are labelled with patient or donor identifiers, batch numbers, and dates – supporting the chain of custody and traceability requirements that HFEA licensing demands. Aluminium canes offer good thermal conductivity, which assists rapid cooling of samples during the freezing process. Half-size cryogenic canes provide a compact storage option for laboratories with high sample density requirements. Cryolab supplies IVF storage canes in full and compact sizes, compatible with standard canister and racking systems.
