Cryocanes are rigid aluminium rods used to hold and organise cryogenic storage items inside a liquid nitrogen tank. They form the structural layer of the IVF laboratory storage hierarchy: straws are loaded into goblets, goblets are attached to canes, and canes are placed inside the canister within the storage vessel. Cryolab supplies half canes in addition to the full-length format for greater flexibility in specific tank configurations.
Canes can be colour-coded using plastic identification tabs for rapid visual identification, essential in busy IVF units managing multiple patients samples simultaneously. Cryocane coders provide additional identification at the cane level. Brady label printers with cryogenic-rated labels enable printed identification directly on straws, cryovials, and canes for full HFEA chain-of-identity compliance and ISO 20387-accredited biobank traceability.
