Cryocanes are long, narrow rods used to organise and stack CBS straws within goblets inside LN2 storage vessels. Filled and sealed straws slot over the cane and are stacked vertically. The loaded cryocane sits within a goblet, the goblet loads into a canister, and the canister sits in the main storage vessel. This four-level hierarchy — cane, goblet, canister, vessel — is the standard IVF laboratory storage organisation system and is designed to allow systematic retrieval of specific samples without disturbing the rest of the vessel contents.

Each cryocane position within a goblet corresponds to a documented patient record, with the cane identified by a cryocane coder or colour-coded identification system. This is the traceability layer that allows an embryologist to locate a specific patient’s straws within a vessel holding hundreds or thousands of samples. Accurate cane position documentation is an HFEA traceability requirement and is the point in the storage hierarchy most commonly implicated in sample location errors.

Cryocanes are available in standard lengths compatible with the internal dimensions of CryoNest and CryoCan vessels. Cryolab supplies cryocanes, cryocane coders, cryosleeves, goblets, and canisters as part of the full CBS-compatible storage accessory range. Contact Cryolab for stocking and compatibility guidance.
