A semen container in IVF and andrology is a sealed vessel used to collect, transport, or store a semen sample at a specific stage of the clinical workflow. The term encompasses collection pots (used at the point of sample production), transport containers (used to bring samples from an external location to the laboratory), and cryopreservation containers (the straws or cryovials into which processed semen is loaded before freezing). Each container type is appropriate for a specific step and not interchangeable.
What type of semen container is used for collection?
At the point of collection, a semen sample is collected into a sterile, non-spermicidal collection pot. Standard plastic specimen containers are not appropriate: many plastics contain compounds that reduce sperm motility. The collection pot must be laboratory-grade, sperm-safe, and clearly labelled with patient identification before the sample is produced.
What type of semen container is used for transport to the laboratory?
When a sample is produced off-site – at home or at a satellite collection facility – it must be transported to the laboratory in a container that maintains it within the acceptable temperature range (between 20 and 37 degrees C) and reaches the laboratory within a defined time window. Dedicated semen transport containers with thermal insulation are used for this purpose. The container must not contain any material incompatible with the sample, and the patient identity documentation must travel with the container.
What type of semen container is used for cryopreservation?
For cryopreservation, extended semen samples are loaded into high security straws (0.3ml or 0.5ml) or cryovials, sealed, and frozen using a controlled rate freezer or liquid nitrogen vapour protocol. Each container must carry a unique patient or donor identifier that will remain legible at -195.8 degrees C throughout the storage period.
A semen container is only as useful as the documentation travelling with it. In an HFEA-licensed setting, a sample in an unlabelled or incorrectly labelled container is not a usable sample – it is a traceability incident.
