Safe liquid nitrogen tank use in a laboratory requires controls across several risk categories. Personal protective equipment is mandatory when handling liquid nitrogen: cryogenic gloves rated to EN 511, face protection, and closed footwear as a minimum. Tanks should never be moved when full without appropriate trolleys – tipping or dropping a dewar risks impact damage to the vacuum insulation. Storage areas must be ventilated and equipped with a calibrated oxygen depletion monitor set to alarm below 19.5 percent oxygen concentration. Tanks must never be sealed airtight. Liquid nitrogen should never be transported in an enclosed vehicle cabin or lift. Filling operations should be performed with slow pouring to minimise splashing and vapour generation. In HFEA-licensed settings, risk assessments for liquid nitrogen handling must be documented and reviewed periodically, and staff must receive documented training before handling cryogenic materials. Cryolab’s cryogenic storage equipment includes guidance on safe use and handling for all vessels supplied.
