Liquid nitrogen tank safety in the UK is governed by a combination of statutory regulations and industry codes of practice that every laboratory manager, embryologist, and clinical scientist handling LN2 should know.

The primary statutory framework includes the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which require a formal risk assessment for all LN2 activities. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 apply specifically to moving dewars, which can be considerably heavy when full. For pressurised vessels, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 apply and require a written scheme of examination and periodic inspection by a competent person.

The British Compressed Gases Association’s Code of Practice CP30 (Revision 3, 2019) is the definitive practical guide for safe use of liquid nitrogen dewars up to 50 litres in the UK. It covers dewar inspection before use, filling procedures, transport within a facility, storage location requirements, and disposal of waste LN2. Any laboratory without a copy of CP30 in its safety documentation library has a gap.

Pre-use inspection is non-negotiable. Every dewar should be visually checked before each use for signs of vacuum failure, which include condensation or frost on the outer shell and an abnormally high evaporation rate. A dewar showing these signs must be taken out of service immediately and the contents transferred to a serviceable vessel.

Ventilation is the most commonly underestimated safety requirement. Rooms where LN2 is stored or used must be ventilated to maintain oxygen concentration above 19.5 per cent even if the largest vessel in the room is completely spilled. Where this cannot be guaranteed by natural ventilation alone, mechanical extraction and fixed oxygen monitoring are required.

Personal protective equipment for LN2 handling must include cryogenic gloves rated for LN2 temperatures, a full face shield, and appropriate body protection. Standard laboratory gloves are not sufficient.

Cryolab supplies a full range of LN2 safety equipment including cryogenic gloves and face shields for UK laboratory use. View the range at cryolab.co.uk/product-category/safety-wear/.
