1. Wear protective gear: Always use insulated gloves, lab coat, and eye or face protection to prevent frostbite or splashes.
  2. Maintain upright position: Keep dewars upright and stable at all times. Never tilt or roll them, as spills or rapid evaporation can be dangerous.

  3. Avoid direct contact: Never touch liquid nitrogen or surfaces cooled by it with bare skin. Even brief contact can cause severe frostbite.

  4. Use proper ventilation: Work in well-ventilated areas to prevent oxygen displacement, which can create a risk of suffocation.

  5. Transport carefully: Use carts or carriers for heavy dewars. Never lift large dewars manually unless they are designed for it.

  6. Handle slowly: Pour or transfer liquid nitrogen slowly to minimise splashing and rapid gas expansion.

  7. Secure lids loosely: When storing, keep lids slightly ajar to allow nitrogen gas to vent safely; never seal a dewar completely.

  8. Keep flammables away: Liquid nitrogen can cause materials to become extremely cold and brittle—keep flammable or reactive materials at a safe distance.

  9. Monitor nitrogen levels: Regularly check fill levels to avoid sudden evaporation and ensure samples remain at stable temperatures.

  10. Emergency procedures: Know the location of safety showers, eye wash stations, and first aid kits in case of exposure.
