Cryogenic personal protective equipment is sometimes treated as a tick-box compliance item in IVF laboratories. The reality is that liquid nitrogen exposure is genuinely dangerous – it causes instant, severe cryogenic burns on skin contact, and splashes to the eyes or face can cause permanent damage. The PPE requirements are not bureaucratic formality.
The Liquid Nitrogen Hazard in Context
Liquid nitrogen at -195.8°C causes rapid, deep tissue damage on contact. The injury can look deceptively minor initially – appearing white or waxy – and worsen significantly as tissue thaws. Eye exposure can cause permanent vision damage. In an IVF laboratory, liquid nitrogen is handled multiple times daily across several different tasks, each with a different risk profile.
Why Glove Length Matters
The depth to which your hands and arms enter a liquid nitrogen vessel determines the glove length you need. Reaching into a shallow working dewar to retrieve a sample near the surface requires wrist-length protection. Reaching into a deep storage vessel to access a canister at the bottom of a 60-centimetre neck requires elbow-length or shoulder-length protection. Cryolab supplies cryogenic laboratory gloves in wrist, mid-arm, elbow and shoulder lengths. Using wrist-length gloves for deep vessel access is not compliant and creates genuine injury risk.
Face Protection
Liquid nitrogen splashes upward when it contacts warm surfaces. Any procedure involving nitrogen pouring or transfer requires face protection. Safety goggles protect the eyes but leave the face exposed. A full-face shield is the appropriate specification for high-splash-risk tasks including vessel filling and dry shipper charging.
Safety Aprons
Waterproof safety aprons provide body protection during nitrogen handling, particularly during dry shipper charging where larger volumes are handled.
A quick audit question for lab managers: when did someone last check that the correct glove length is available at every nitrogen-handling station, and that all staff know which length applies to which task?
