The crossover point between cylinder-based LN2 supply and bulk delivery depends on consumption rate, storage infrastructure, delivery logistics, and supply interruption risk. As a general guide, laboratories consuming more than 100 litres of liquid nitrogen per week begin to encounter the practical limitations of cylinder supply: delivery frequency, manual handling burden, cylinder storage requirements, and higher per-litre cost.
The Health and Safety Executive COSHH guidance applies to both supply formats and governs safe handling, storage, and risk assessment for liquid nitrogen in workplace environments. Bulk supply additionally requires on-site infrastructure including a vacuum-insulated bulk tank, pressure regulators, and distribution pipework. For HFEA-licensed fertility clinics, any supply arrangement must be evaluated against the maximum hold time of storage vessels in use and the risk of supply interruption. A bulk tank that runs dry over a bank holiday weekend with no cylinder backup is not a cost saving. It is a clinical emergency.
