Aluminium cryogenic canes have been the dominant format for organised sample storage within liquid nitrogen dewars in IVF and reproductive medicine laboratories for decades. Their position as the laboratory standard reflects a combination of material properties, practical performance, and universal compatibility with the racking and canister systems in widespread use globally.

Aluminium’s thermal conductivity is the primary material advantage. When a loaded aluminium cane is plunged into liquid nitrogen, it cools rapidly to -196°C, ensuring that the samples within the goblets it carries reach cryogenic temperature quickly and uniformly. This matters most during the initial loading of a freshly vitrified sample – any delay in reaching storage temperature during the transition from the vitrification procedure to the dewar could compromise the integrity of the vitrification.

Mechanical robustness is the second key advantage. Aluminium canes resist deformation under the handling conditions of a working IVF laboratory – repeated insertion into and retrieval from canisters, contact with canister walls during access, and occasional dropping during transfer. A cane that deforms under normal handling creates retrieval problems that can only be resolved by disturbing other samples in the canister.

Premium quality aluminium cryo canes contain a flat top used as a writing or marking surface or for coloured cryo tags for accurate inventory identification, with overall dimensions typically 11.5 inches by 0.5 inches outer diameter, suitable for use with 12mm or 13mm goblets in Dewar-type liquid nitrogen freezers.

Universal compatibility with standard goblet formats (12mm and 13mm), standard canister dimensions, and standard dewar racking systems means that aluminium cryogenic canes specified by one supplier are interchangeable with those of another, which is important for laboratories managing supply chain continuity.

Half-size aluminium cryogenic canes are available for programmes that prioritise storage density and access granularity within the same canister space.
